Q&A with Chris

Which city are you currently based in?

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

What did your pathway into the industry look like?
I started out as a business major and, during my schooling, had the very fortunate opportunity to work at Square USA, where I was introduced to the captivating 3D film and animation industry. I quickly pivoted my education goals and switched to studying 3D digital animation and gaming. After graduating from the University of Hawaii, I worked as a 3D modeler/compositor on the hit TV series, Lost. Then I pursued mobile gaming and VR simulations in Canada. Shortly after, I decided to join Dekogon Studios, one of the gaming industry's top outsource company.
What has been the best experience of your career so far?
To be honest, everything about my 3D career has been an amazing experience. I enjoy everything about the industry and the exceptionally talented people I meet and get to work with. One experience that never gets old is seeing my work in film or games.
What’s your advice for students?

Stay humble as much as you can. Let your artwork, dedication and work ethics do the talking. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, don't be afraid to ask. YouTube and Google are great resources, I highly encourage self learning. 95% of things you can't figure out, the answers are online. Whether you like it or not, the game industry is extremely competitive, so be prepared to fight your way in.

What do you enjoy most about being a CG Spectrum mentor?
I enjoy the energy, motivation and talent new students bring to the table. It is a great feeling to know I can give back to the 3D community by mentoring.
How do you stay creative outside of work?
The one major benefit of working in the 3D industry for me has been the variety of projects I get to work on. Every project is different, which keeps my creative skills active and tested on a daily basis.
What excites you most about the future of modeling?
As we shift into next-gen systems and games, what excites me most is the lack of polygon restrictions. What was once rendered frame by frame is very close to being playable real-time.
