Fight Club Challenge

Welcome to CGS Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is to give this challenge your best shot!

OVERVIEW

Fight Club Round 1: Concept Art

Each month, students from a new department will have the chance to create an element of a functional Fighter’s Arena. Think: Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Injustice.

The first round starts with concept art and there will be prizes at the end of each round. Part of the goal of this challenge will also be to provide students in other disciplines with concept art so they can potentially turn your designs into dynamic 3D models, animations and effects.

Why you should enter:

  • Practice your skills and build up your portfolio
  • Win one of four CGS swag packs worth $150
  • See your art come to life!

ATTENTION: ROUND 1 HAS NOW ENDED! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUBMISSIONS. WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON.

STAY TUNED FOR ROUND 2: 3D MODELING CONTEST DETAILS!

Asset Development

This month’s challenge will be focused on asset development for a fighting game.

Modern fighting games tend to be a great showcase for character, prop, environment, animation, and FX assets.

The camera in fighting games is usually positioned close to the action while also framing beautiful background environments, so it is an excellent opportunity for aspiring concept artists to practice developing a complete range of asset work for one project.

Round 1 fight ends at 11:59pm on November 30, 2021 (GMT)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Submission requirements

Who can enter: The contest is for CG Spectrum students and alumni with less than 12 months of professional experience in a related field. Your participation in this contest is entirely voluntary and in addition to your regular school work. To be eligible, you may not miss any classes and homework!

Prompt: Your creation can come from your own imagination, but if you are stuck without an idea feel free to use Halloween-inspired characters and environments.

Eg: Vampire, castle draw bridge, vampire bite, bat swarm.
Eg: Ghost, graveyard, shapeshift, possession effect.
Eg: Dr. Jeckyl/Mister Hyde, laboratory, Jekyll-Hyde metamorphosis, toxic cloud.
Eg: Witch, creepy hut in the woods, broom attack, magic wand energy arc.

Format Requirements: All submitted images must be in Jpeg format at 3840 x 2160 pixels (4k).

Character Design: 1 Jpeg that includes a Front ¾ & back ¾ render of the fighter in a neutral pose. See examples.

Stage Art: 1 Jpeg of the environment. See examples.

Move Set Art: 1 jpeg of 3-6 sequential sketches of the move set. See examples.

Move Set Effect: 1 Jpeg of 3-6 sequential sketches of the effect in its specific stages of movement. See examples.

Content Requirements: These designs will potentially be used in modelling, animation, and FX students’ challenges so the characters should be anthropomorphic bipeds and not based on animals/insects for ease of production.

The target demographic will be 13+ years old and as such the designs should not include any overt sexuality, drug use, gore, or any other inappropriate imagery. If you need a reference for the quality of content we are looking for please refer to modern fighting games like Street Fighter, Injustice, Guilty Gear, etc.

Deadline: 11:59pm November 30th, 2021 (GMT)

Judging Criteria

How to win this round

The concept art and illustration mentors will judge the winners based on:

  • Submission requirements: All submission and format requirements must be followed.
  • Originality: The designs should feel original and not derivative.
  • Technical quality: The designs should exhibit quality line work and rendering, correct use of perspective, accurate material representation, believable anatomy, and believable lighting.
  • Presentation: The designs should be spaced well on the page and not crowded. There shouldn’t be random/messy strokes and artefacts that do not relate to the design. The design should be easy to read and not posed or rendered in a way that makes the details difficult to understand.
